We offer both Basic Skills (learn to skate) figure skating and hockey skating skills classes and freestyle ice for club members October - March depending on availability through our home rink, The DeSoto Civic Center in Southaven, MS. Direct questions to info@fscmemphis.org. Why doesn't the Figure Skating Club of Memphis have ice sessions year round? The Figure Skating Club of Memphis and the local figure skating community have been without a permanent ice rink since the Ice Chalet at the Mall of Memphis closed in late 2003 (as a result of the mall's demise). For the past few years, the club has purchased ice time from the DeSoto Civic Center in Southaven, MS. The DeSoto Civic Center has ice during hockey season (October - March). The Mississippi RiverKings and Memphis Youth Hockey both practice and play games at the DeSoto Civic Center. When hockey season ends in March, the ice is taken down at the Civic Center and the arena is used for other venues throughout the spring and summer months. As such, the club must purchase all ice time from the Civic Center and cover the cost of the ice/arena rental through club member registration fees, ice session fees, skating classes, fundraising, and donations from the general public. The Figure Skating Club of Memphis is a non-profit organization consisting of a volunteer Board of Directors, Coaches, and Club Members (skaters, parents of skaters, and figure skating enthusiasts) that volunteer their time to ensure that the Club can provide ice sessions to anyone wishing to learn to figure skate recreationally and to provide training time to local competitive skaters who wish to advance through the US Figure Skating Association's levels in singles, pairs, and dance. At this time, there are limited options for training time during the spring and summer months in the entire mid-south area. A number of local figure skaters and coaches make regular trips to other regional ice rinks in Little Rock, Arkansas, and Nashville, TN. Travel time is over 2 hours each way to either of the closest permanent ice rink locations. The Figure Skating Club of Memphis continues to advocate for our figure skating community and monitor proposed local ice rink proposals. To date, there is no current ice facility under construction in the community. There are several proposed projects and you can read about them under our "Ice Rink Information" link on our web site.
