Ice Rink Information
Memphis figure skaters lost their only permanent ice facility in 2003 with the closing of the Mall of Memphis Ice Chalet. Since that time, The FSC of Memphis has worked to provide ice for members at the DeSoto Civic Center in Southaven, MS during the fall and winter months while also working to support efforts to bring a permanent ice facility to the mid-south.

Interested in news related to ice rinks/skating in the mid-south outside of the ice time provided by the FSCM at the DeSoto Civic Center? Here are a few sources to check for information.

Proposed Permanent/Year-Round Ice Rink Facilities in the Mid-South:

  • Cordova Gameday SportsPlex Information (proposed ice facility in Cordova, TN - about 20 miles from Memphis city center). This project used to have a page devoted to the SportsPlex which discussed plans for a dual sheet facility. Questions have remained about Gameday's plan to move forward with this facility, especially with the unfortunate passing of their founder. Recently, a web page with more information about the SportsPlex has been taken down. But I found a small note about the SportsPlex in their Gameday Baseball Newsletter: "The Cordova Development Group is working on Phase II of the Gameday Sportsplex featuring hotels, restaurants and other sporting venues across from the baseball complex on Fischer Steel Road. Questions concerning or interest in the Gameday Sportsplex project should be directed to Frank Fitzgerald at 901-853-4770."

  • Ice Sports USA, Inc (proposed ice facility in Bartlett, TN - about 15 miles from Memphis city center)

  • Jonesboro Ice Rink (proposed ice facility in Jonesboro, AR - about 70 miles from Memphis city center - the web site is currently down)

  • DeSoto Civic Center Expansion Proposal (there has been some discussion/news about adding a second sheet of ice at the civic center though nothing has been confirmed or expanded upon; there has been discussion of this as far back as the closing of the Ice Chalet.)

Individual Skater Sponsorship
Many individual skaters seek out sponsorship to defray many expenses associated with training. A popular organization that assists skaters in this endeavor is the New England Amateur Skating Foundation. The New England Amateur Skating Foundation is a Tax-exempt organization under section 501 (c) (3) of the Internal Revenue Code. The mission of the New England Amateur Skating Foundation is to help competitive skaters by defraying some of their ever-increasing expenses. The NEASF provides a platform for skaters to receive donations from individuals and groups, and these donations to the skater may be tax deductible. For more information send email to neasf@hotmail.com. You can also request information about sponsorship through the NEASF by mailing your request to P.O. Box 6881, Providence, RI 02940. Fax 401-861-3628.

The US Figure Skating web site also provides a variety of information pertaining to funding, grants, awards, and sponsorships for individual skaters.
